Chancellor's government statement Together we have managed to slow the spread of the virus

The COVID-19 pandemic is a huge test, stressed Chancellor Angela Merkel in a government statement to the German Bundestag. Together we have managed to slow the spread of the virus, she said. Nevertheless, she warned of the danger of squandering all we have achieved. Solidarity within Europe, she said, is particularly important to overcome the pandemic.

In her government statement, Chancellor Angela Merkel pointed to initial achievements in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. By working together we have at least manged "to slow the path of the virus through Germany and Europe," said Angela Merkel in the German Bundestag. This has only been possible with the help of everybody in Germany, who has "done their best for others with their heart and with their head," stressed the Chancellor. "I am incredibly grateful for this," she said.

Health system coping so far

Germany is still only at the start of the pandemic, said the Chancellor. "But after the first few weeks of the pandemic I am convinced that we will manage to cope with these gigantic challenges." Angela Merkel stressed that the restrictions of recent weeks have achieved an important goal. "Our health system has so far withstood the test." But it is still important to remain disciplined if we are to fight the COVID-19 pandemic effectively. "Let us not now squander all we have achieved," warned Angela Merkel.

She underscored the importance of European solidarity in overcoming the pandemic. The focus must now be on "swift action". Germany will be actively involved in a European economic recovery programme that can support the essential upswing, said the Chancellor.
