The special postage stamp was an opportunity for citizens to “identify more closely” with the German G7 Presidency by using it on their own correspondence, said Federal Chancellor Scholz. “I hope the stamp will find its way onto many letters so as to raise awareness of the German G7 Presidency,” said Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner at the joint presentation. 

This year the Federal Ministry of Finance is issuing 52 special postage stamps on a variety of themes drawn from German history and culture. One of the stamps is dedicated to the German G7 Presidency. The stamp will be issued from 23 June and will be worth 85 cents.

Ukraine, climate change and digitalisation dominate G7

“G7 is of particular importance this year,” said Federal Chancellor Scholz. “After the start of the terrible war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine, it was essential for us to coordinate with each other within the G7 framework.”

In addition to the seven states, Indonesia, India, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina are also invited to attend the Summit. “This sends out a political signal indicating that global solidarity is of the utmost importance,” said the Federal Chancellor. It was vital to raise the issue of how this war and other changes were impacting on the countries of the global South, said Scholz.

Other summit topics include hunger and how to combat it, digitalisation, democracy, “and also the question of how we can put a stop to man-made climate change”, said Scholz. 

The G7 Summit of the Heads of State and Government will take place from 26 to 28 June 2022 in Elmau , Bavaria, under the German Presidency. Germany took over the G7 Presidency from the UK on 1 January 2022. The G7 Summit came into being in 1975 in response to a global economic crisis. Today, the G7 is an alliance of the world’s economically strong democracies.

Special postage stamp “deliberately minimalist” in design

The special postage stamp features the logo of the German G7 Presidency shown under the motto “Progress towards an equitable world”. Germany currently holds the G7 Presidency for the seventh time. The Federal Government will make use of this to address key global challenges in coordination with its G7 partners.

The design of the G7 logo is deliberately minimalist and clear-cut: it focuses entirely on the two main elements “G” and “7”, which are combined to form a powerful symbol. This reduction to the essentials seeks to reflect the new Federal Government’s focused work programme for the Presidency. The two complementary elements of the logo underline the solid, trusting cooperation between the G7 countries and their partners.

There is a particular art to capturing broad themes effectively within a very small space. Designer Thomas Serres from Hattingen created the design of the postage stamp for Germany’s G7 Presidency – as he has done for more than 40 postage stamps before. The logo was designed by the agency Zum goldenen Hirschen Berlin. The value of the postage stamp is 85 cents. Three million will be printed. The stamp will be available at Deutsche Post sales outlets from 23 June.
