The Federal Chancellor attended the Global Solutions Summit in Berlin, met with the cast of "All Quiet on the Western Front" at the Chancellery, and travelled to Reykjavik for the Council of Europe Summit – see the Federal Chancellor's week in pictures here.

Berlin, 15 May 2023: At the Global Solutions Summit on Monday, Federal Chancellor Scholz articulated one of the central questions of our time: "How can we maintain an international order based on the United Nations Charter and international law in the 21st century?" Part of the solution, Scholz suggested, would be a more inclusive and balanced international order than has hitherto been the case.
Berlin, 15 May 2023: The Federal Chancellor then went on to welcome some of the cast of "All Quiet on the Western Front” including Malte Grunert (7th from left), film director Edward Berger (10th from left), and other members of the cast in the Chancellery and to congratulate them on their huge success.
Olaf Scholz congratulated the film director, Malte Grunert, on the nine Lolas, seven British Academy Film Awards, and four Oscars that the film received.
Reykjavik, 16 May 2023: Federal Chancellor Scholz attended the summit with the heads of state and government of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, a meeting, which is only convened in response to extraordinary events – in this case, the Russian offensive against Ukraine.
As Scholz explained upon his arrival, this was an "important meeting at an extremely difficult time". The participants, he said, wanted to make it clear "that we insist upon those values that are important for Europe", which include the rule of law, democracy, and the work of the European Court of Human Rights.
The most consequent course of action for the Council of Europe, he said, was to continue to do everything possible to support Ukraine on its democratic, European path "by defending it against Russian aggression, by securing those institutions necessary to enforce the rule of law, with the reconstruction, for example with the aid of the Council of Europe Development Bank, and through capacity development in the judiciary".
