Berlin, 4 April 2022: Since 20 March, the former Tegel airport has served as a central arrival and registration point for people who have fled Ukraine. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz pays an on-site visit with the Mayor of Berlin Franziska Giffey.
According to the Berlin Senate, up to 10,000 people can be registered here every day. There are 120 counters available for this purpose. After a short stay, many of the war refugees are then supposed to travel on to other federal states.
The Federal Chancellor is impressed by what the numerous volunteers and employees of the Federal and Länder Governments have achieved in such a short time to ensure that the refugees are well looked after.
By registering, refugees can get help with finding accommodation, obtaining a work permit and attending free language courses. The Federal Chancellor was able to try out the registration process for himself with a fingerprint and photo – it takes no longer than 15 minutes.
Many refugees are dependent on clothing donations, especially for children. This is because 30 to 40 percent of those arriving are children. Aid organisations help with distribution.
Giffey and Scholz talk to many of the helpers about the various challenges involved. “The war in Ukraine is a challenge for us all. But it also shows how much each and every individual is willing to do to help,” said the Federal Chancellor.
